RRHOF Predictions 2020…Yay

Actual Rock Hall ballot response

Happy New Year, one and all! I was all ready to open with “So it’s been busy lately” and then saw that it’s been nearly three months since my last post. Meanwhile, people have been posting all kinds of insightful Rock Hall commentary, and Eric and Mary at the Hall Watchers podcast have posted brilliant episodes even as they travel to Europe and get ready to move. So yeah…I’m lame.

But since the fan vote is almost sort of about to start getting ready to think about winding down after what, six months now? it’s time to go on record with my predictions for the class of 2020.

It’s been noted how this year’s ballot was met with more or less a collective yawn despite containing some worthy names, and it doesn’t look like excitement has grown since then. However the class shakes out, what’ll be really interesting what the Hall throws out there to create a buzz-worthy induction ceremony.

It looks like this year is a placeholder before the Hall takes its first tentative steps into the Sykes era. In that vein, I’m not predicting any big surprises. Here goes:

  1. Pat Benatar: She’s deserved it for a long time, and it looks like the stars have aligned to make this her year. For the Hall, she represents a way to add a woman to the ranks, appeal to Boomers/Gen Xers and women and maintain a little rock cred at all the same time. It took a long time for her camp to acknowledge the nomination, so I’m not positive her attendance is a given, but she’ll probably be there, which is something this show is desperately going to need.
  2. The Doobie Brothers: Again, big appeal for the Boomer crowd and they tick the “rock” box for adventure-phobic voting committee members. And as noted, they’ve got Irving Azoff going to bat for them and they’re gearing up for a 50th-anniversary tour. As Future Rock Legends said, it’s hard not to feel a little cynicism about the neatness of all this as a marketing opportunity — for the band and the Hall both — but they do still sound good together and they’ll be fun at the ceremony. (If they played “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)” I’d be chuffed, but it’s not likely).
  3. Dave Matthews Band: Listening to the “Who Cares About the Rock Hall” podcast actually made me a little more open to their induction, but Joe Kwaczala is right: this isn’t the time. By most people’s standards, but this is the Rock Hall. There’s conjecture that this is the year that the Fan Vote winner doesn’t go all the way, but I don’t see it happening. The Hall blithely ignores specific criticism, but they’re highly sensitive to factors that affect the bottom line. They won’t completely alienate such a big fan base, backward-ball-cap-wearing frat boys or not. (Like obnoxious fan bases have ever stopped them). They ignored the input from the kiosks this year, so the grab for ratings will be slightly less blatant, but this band made a significant charge to claim the top spot by a huge margin. There’s a noticeable percentage of deceased artists on the ballot and it’s likely more than one will be inducted. The powers that be might have privately thought that inducting Journey was “brutal” but they’ve kept going down the populist road, following them up with Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. The Hall’s more openly impressed with sales numbers now, and this is where it looks like they’re headed. I wouldn’t mind being wrong, but I think the ants will march on in.
  4. Notorious B.I.G.: It’s been a couple of years since a hip-hop act went in, and he’ll succeed where LL Cool J hasn’t yet been able to.
  5. Whitney Houston: Given a different ballot, she may not be a sure thing. But she’s undeniably an icon. Clive Davis is no doubt in her corner and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him do the honors for her on the big night.

Besides these Performer inductees, I’m going to take Perelsman up on his hint and say that they’ll redefine “Early Influence” on the fly and put Kraftwerk in under that banner. Is this the right way to do it? It’s the Hall, remember?

It’s less likely, but again because of the number of departed potential inductees, we just may get a Musical Excellence pick in Todd Rundgren. He’s signaled that he won’t bother to show, and that could help him here. Hopefully his fan base woiuld rally to convince him otherwise, but his 10th place showing in the fan poll points to them adopting his curmudgeonly attitude.

Eddie Trunk loved the ballot as predicted, but also as predicted, the hard rock acts will likely cancel each other out. If Judas Priest showed so badly just a couple of years ago, why would this try be different?

It’s not ideal, but we’re never going to get ideal. This year, we’re treading water — the real drama starts this summer.

  1. Although you said no big surprises with your predictions, it is rather adventurous of you to speculate that “classic rock” won’t comprise at least half of the class. Otherwise, good prediction.

  2. Michelle,

I’m not going to make any predictions for the inductees this year, but I will say that Pat Benatar and The Doobie Brothers are the two locks for induction this year since they’re both populist Classic Rock acts and populist Classic Rock acts have dominated the induction classes for the last decade, I also think that the following acts are also top contenders for induction this year as well:

Depeche Mode (The Cure’s induction last year helps them, plus there’s also the third time’s a charm thing going for them, also, their induction would certainly open the door for other 80’s New Wave/Alternative acts such as Eurythmics, Duran Duran, The B-52’s, The Go-Go’s, Devo, The Smiths, Joy Division/New Order, The Replacements, Pixies and Sonic Youth)

Whitney Houston (Janet Jackson’s induction last year helps her and Clive Davis is certainly pushing for her to get in, plus, her induction would open the door for other Pop Divas such as Mariah Carey and Tina Turner)

Judas Priest (despite them doing horribly in the voting last time that they were nominated and the competition from the other Hard Rock/Metal acts that are nominated this year (Motorhead and Thin Lizzy), I think that Priest (along with Thin Lizzy) have the best chance of getting in this year out of all of the Hard Rock/Metal acts that are nominated this year)

Kraftwerk (I know this is a long shot, but I think that Kraftwerk might finally break through and get inducted this year, either via the Performer category and as an Early Influence, which Joel Peresman said that it might happen, Regardless, Kraftwerk is the biggest snub of the HOF by far and should finally be recognized)

Nine Inch Nails (Radiohead’s induction last year helps them (or him), plus Trent inducted The Cure at last year’s ceremony and this year’s ceremony is back in Cleveland (the place where NIN was formed), also, Trent had a pretty big year this past year as well, and like I said earlier with Depeche Mode, there’s also the third time’s a charm thing going for them)

The Notorious B.I.G. (Rap/Hip-Hop hasn’t gotten an inductee since Tupac 3 years ago in 2017 and Biggie is Tupac’s rival, also, we haven’t gotten a FYE inductee since Pearl Jam and Tupac 3 years ago as well, so I think that he stands a really good chance of getting in this year on his first year eligible)

Todd Rundgren (I was very shocked that he didn’t get in last year, I was certain that he would get in last year right away, but his attitude towards the Hall might hurt his chances of getting in, Still, I think he stands a decent chance of getting in this year either as a Performer or as a Musical Excellence recipient)

Soundgarden (They’re well-destined to be the next Grunge Band to go into the Hall, following Nirvana and Pearl Jam, plus they did a tribute to Chris Cornell at the last Cleveland ceremony two years ago, so I think that they stand a terrific chance of getting in this year, The only thing that might hurt them for getting in this year is that Vicky Cornell (Chris Cornell’s widow) has recently sued the band and their manager for unpaid royalties and the rights to unreleased recordings of Chris before he died in 2017, Other than that, I think that they’ll get in sooner rather than later (if not this year)

    T. Rex (Roxy Music’s induction last year helps them and they will get plenty of support among current HOFers like Alice Cooper, Elton John, Ringo Starr and the members of Def Leppard and Roxy Music, not to mention Music Critics as well, so they stand a really good chance of getting in this year on their first try)

Thin Lizzy (They could be a Dark Horse/Wild Card inductee this year, Almost every guest that appeared on the Who Cares About The Rock Hall podcast said that they would vote for them if they had a ballot, The one thing that hurts their chances of getting in this year is that there is so much competition from the other Hard Rock/Metal acts that are nominated this year (Judas Priest and Motorhead), Still, they could surprise and sneak in as well, I think they (along with Judas Priest) have the best chance of getting in this year out of all of the Hard Rock/Metal acts that are nominated this year)

I just don’t see much of a chance this year for MC5 or Rufus With Chaka Khan and Motorhead will be hurt by the other Hard Rock/Metal acts that are nominated this year.

I think that Dave Matthews Band will become the first fan vote winner to not get inducted, simply because there are far more other artists that are far more deserving of an induction at this point than DMB, I just think that their nomination this year was such a huge mistake and such a wasted one on the Rock Hall’s part, They’re the least deserving act on the ballot this year by far and I really think that their spot on the ballot this year really should have gone to either Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains, Jane’s Addiction, Oasis, Weezer, Tool, Stone Temple Pilots or No Doubt because they’re all far more deserving of an induction as far as 90’s acts go at this point than DMB, I really think that this will be the first year that the Fan Vote Winner does not get into the Hall, Yes, We’ve seen Rush, Kiss, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chicago, Journey, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard all win the fan vote and then get inducted that year, but I really think that this will be the first year that it will not happen, The streak has to end sooner or later and I really think that it will happen this year with DMB, DMB just won’t be able to compete with the two other 90’s acts that are nominated this year (Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden), so they won’t have the votes to ever get inducted IMO.

    What do you think?.

  3. Yeah, not so exciting. I know three of these acts are definitely going in the Hall, if nothing else: Whitney, Pat and the Doobies.

To me they’ve always been the surefire (and safe, I guess) bets.

If DMB goes in via the tradition of getting in just for topping the fan vote, then that leaves out the fifth inductee and it might as well go to B.I.G. If not, I’m holding out a chance for Soundgarden to sneak in.

But I think we’ll have six inductees so I’m holding out an induction for either Depeche Mode or T. Rex.

No way, any of the hard rock acts have a shot this year.

But if any band has a chance after the Doobies and DMB (or Soundgarden), it’s probably Depeche Mode, meaning if there’s no seventh induction, T. Rex will be left out unfortunately but they remain my wildcard hope just in case they outvote Depeche Mode.

    My final predictions are:
    Whitney Houston (The Voice)
Pat Benatar (The Queen of Early ’80s Rock)
    The Doobie Brothers
Soundgarden (if DMB loses fan vote)
The Notorious B.I.G. (too big a name to escape, same with Whitney)
    Depeche Mode

Out of all of the predictions made by the Rock Hall Watchers (including you) so far for the 2020 Rock Hall induction class, Which one do you think is the most likely outcome for the 2020 Rock Hall induction class?.

  5. I’m sure you’re writing an article on the actual nominees – now that they’ve been announced earlier this week. Fascinating that just about everyone thought Pat Benatar was getting in this year, and of course it didn’t happen.

Fan vote snubbed, can’t really expect fans to care much if you completely ignore them. I wonder how many will bother with the fan vote next year. Either make the fan vote really mean something, say for example that the winner of the fan vote gets inducted (in this case, the Dave Matthews Band), or simply don’t bother with it if you’re going to completely ignore it.

Will be fascinated to hear your thoughts on the ESO podcast regarding this year’s induction class, especially about the snubbing of the fan vote.

    1. Hi – Working on it; hope to post it later today. And agreed about the vote. The guys, Ricky and Bambi and I will be talking about it all on this week’s show – should be interesting!
